COM 494 Journalism Expedition to Slovenia (March 11 – 22, 2004)
1-3 credits. Prerequisite: Application process; instructor approval.
Dr. Sharon Murphy

The 10-day expedition will include prior study of assigned readings, travel to Ljubljana, Slovenia, and other cities in this Central European country, as well as to Zagreb, capital of Croatia, and collaborative journalistic venues with Slovenian journalism students. In the 2003-4 academic year, Bradley students will write assigned pieces for the Ljubljana student publication, Klin, and Ljubljana students will write pieces for the Bradley Scout. There has also been discussion of photo collaboration.

In March, expeditioners will leave from Chicago O’Hare and fly to Ljubljana, Slovenia. They will meet with students and faculties of journalism, visit media houses, and soak up the culture in this former Yugoslavian republic.

English is spoken widely and is sufficient for a successful experience. Students will be encouraged and assisted to learn rudimentary words and phrases to enhance the experience.

Students who have already made the expedition will be able to fill in many details. Another resource, developed by the Expedition leaders, is the following: http://www.wississippi.com/slo/sld001.htm

We will have a few meetings early in the semester to get oriented to the trip, learn some Slovene expressions, take care of practical and logistical details, and resolve questions expeditioners and their parents might have.
